For the third year already, students of Kirov State Medical University, alongside faculty from the Department of Microbiology and Virology, have taken their classroom studies outdoors with a hands-on microbiological expedition. Led by department head Ekaterina Kolevatykh and senior staff, participants collected and analysed water samples from regional reservoirs, conducted microscopic research, and mapped depths using topographic data.
This immersive approach not only sparks student interest but also nurtures creativity and practical skills. This year, the initiative gained extra momentum with the participation of Vice-Rector for Educational and Social Work.
Beyond scientific inquiry, the expedition to Keleynoye Lake included kayaking, packrafting, sapboarding and climbing basics, capped off by a communal campfire and lessons in wildlife respect. The event welcomed international students from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, and Yemen, making it a truly global experience.
All participants hailed the expedition as “a glorious event" with special thanks to assistant professor Alexey Yurlov, the campaign’s visionary leader.
