In 1991, by order of the rector of the Kirov State Medical Academy (at that time a branch of the Perm Medical Academy), Professor V.A. Zhuravlev, an oncology course was opened at the Department of Hospital Surgery, and then the Department of Oncology was established with a course of radiation diagnostics and radiation therapy. The head of the course, and then the department, was appointed Candidate of Medical Sciences A. G. Kislichko. Since 2020, he has been the head of the Department of Oncology, S.A. Kislichko.

     Traditions have been formed since the period of the organization, which are still preserved at the present time: the first of them is a strictly observed principle – a highly qualified oncologist should be a teacher. Thus, by the time of the organization, the head of the department already had extensive practical experience in oncology and the department of the oncological dispensary headed by him became a regional center for the treatment of head and neck tumors. In 1992, M.Yu., Candidate of Medical Sciences, was invited to the oncology course. Popov, who has considerable experience in scientific and practical work in the field of oncology, including work experience at the Cancer Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1998, the department joined the course of radiation diagnostics and radiation therapy, the head of the course is associate professor G.P. Martyshkin. G.P. Martyshkin for a long time after graduating from graduate school at the Leningrad GIDUV was the head of the X-ray radiological department of the Kirov NIIGiPK. The tradition is continuity in the work of the department and the medical base. The chief doctors of the dispensary provided all possible assistance and support to the department for a long period of time. The chief physician Kuzmin A.A., the head of the surgical department No. 2 Glushkov E.A., the head of the department of scythography T.P. Ovsyannikova work at the department as assistants. All this, as well as the fact that the base of the department was the Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology – a large multidisciplinary medical and preventive institution, allowed the Department of Oncology from the first years of its existence to take a worthy place among the leading departments of oncology in the country. One of the main tasks of the department is the need to develop a justified view among students on the possibility of a stable cure of an oncological patient, provided that the tumor process is detected in a timely manner. The main thing in passing the cycle of oncology is the education of oncological alertness among students, regardless of their further professional orientation. Since 1998, the department has started training clinical residents and oncologists on cycles of advanced training, professional retraining. Since 2000, the training of graduate students has begun. 4 graduate students have been trained.
     The staff of the department actively participates in the treatment process, working in various departments of the dispensary and providing consultations, rounds, patient management, surgical and other types of treatment. New methods of treatment are being introduced into the practical work of the dispensary departments. The department conducts training cycles of professional retraining and advanced training in the specialties of oncology and radiology.
